Amazon plans $18bn investment in Germany

Amazon plans to invest more than €16bn ($18bn) in Germany in 2027 to expand its cloud computing, artificial intelligence, satellite internet and media businesses.

The investment is part of the e-commerce giant’s strategy to strengthen its European operations amid rising demand for AI services and intensifying competition among technology companies to expand cloud infrastructure across the region.

Announced at the Invest in Germany Summit in Berlin on Tuesday, the investment adds to more than €100bn Amazon says it has invested in the country since 2010.

The latest package includes €4.8bn for the expansion of Amazon Web Services’ Frankfurt cloud region and AI infrastructure.

It also covers new logistics projects expected to create more than 3,000 jobs, the development of Amazon Leo’s satellite broadband network and additional Prime Video productions.

Amazon also plans to establish a second robotics and AI research laboratory in Berlin as part of its broader investment programme.

The commitment follows an investment of €10bn announced in June 2024 to expand the company’s cloud infrastructure and logistics network in Germany. Of that amount, €8.8bn was earmarked for AWS data centres.
