Amazon, Google, and Meta have expressed support for efforts to triple global nuclear energy capacity by 2050.
The tech companies have signed a pledge, initially adopted by over 20 countries, including the U.S., at the December 2023 United Nations Climate Change Conference, to expand nuclear energy.
The pledge is nonbinding but underscores the increasing support for expanding nuclear power from key industries, financial institutions, and governments.
In October, Amazon and Google revealed investments to support the development of small nuclear reactors, a technology still under development that aims to reduce the costs and timelines associated with new reactor builds in the U.S.
Meta in December called for nuclear developers to submit proposals to help the company add up to four gigawatts of new nuclear energy in the U.S.
The pledge signed on Wednesday was led by the World Nuclear Association during the CERAWeek by S&P Global energy conference in Houston.
