Amazon expands online pharmacy services to include prescription pet medications

Amazon plans stand-alone app for payments in India

Amazon announced Thursday that it is broadening its online pharmacy services to include prescription pet medications, marking a strategic move to capture a share of the growing pet care market.

The expansion adds hundreds of commonly prescribed pet medications to its U.S. platform, covering treatments for fleas, ticks, and chronic conditions.

The new service requires veterinarian approval for prescriptions, which are purchased through Amazon’s storefront.

Vetsource, an online pet pharmacy, will handle dispensing and delivery, with typical shipping times ranging from two to six days, according to Amazon.

Launched in 2020, Amazon Pharmacy offers discounts and free delivery for Prime members.

The company has been ramping up its logistics capabilities, introducing same-day prescription delivery in select U.S. cities last year.

Amazon aims to extend this rapid delivery service to nearly half of the U.S. by the end of 2025.

The pet medication initiative pits Amazon against established players like Chewy and Walmart, both of which offer pet prescription delivery.

Amazon’s entry into the pet pharmacy space signals its intent to leverage its e-commerce dominance and logistics prowess to reshape the healthcare and pet care industries.
