Amazon Web Services Inc. experienced a service disruption after unknown objects hit one of its data centers in the United Arab Emirates, triggering a fire.
It remains unclear whether the incident is linked to the US-Iran conflict, but the fire occurred the same day Iranian projectiles struck the UAE in response to US and Israeli strikes that killed Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and other senior officials.
AWS reported that the incident occurred around 4:30 p.m. Dubai time on Sunday. According to its Health Dashboard, the fire department cut power to the facility and its generators while working to put out the blaze.
“One of our Availability Zones … was impacted by objects that struck the data center, creating sparks and fire,” the company said.
AWS stated it has no estimated timeline for restoring power to the affected data center.
The company confirmed that other data center clusters were unaffected and that traffic was being rerouted away from the site. Globally, AWS operates 123 such clusters across 39 regions.
Iran’s retaliation has indeed spread across the Middle East, with multiple rounds of missile and drone strikes launched by Iranian forces at U.S. military bases and allied infrastructure in several countries after U.S. and Israeli attacks on Iran this week.
