Users of Meta’s artificial intelligence assistant, Muse, have reportedly been blocked from purchasing goods on Amazon through the AI agent.

According to GeekWire, users attempting to shop on Amazon through Muse were presented with an error message stating that continued access by an unauthorised AI agent violated Amazon’s Conditions of Use.

The move effectively prevents Muse from acting as a shopping agent on Amazon, forcing users to complete their purchases through other channels.

The development highlights growing tensions between major technology companies as AI agents become increasingly capable of performing tasks on behalf of users, including searching for products and completing transactions.

Amazon operates its own artificial intelligence models and AI infrastructure, potentially giving the e-commerce giant little incentive to open its platform to a rival AI assistant.

Beyond competition, however, there are operational concerns surrounding agent-driven commerce.

If an AI agent makes an incorrect purchase, Amazon could be left to handle complaints from both customers and sellers, particularly where the error involves an inaccurate order or other AI-generated mistake.

Although Muse reportedly has a relatively low hallucination rate compared with some other AI models, such systems can still make errors.

As a result, Amazon may be taking a cautious approach to AI-driven shopping, potentially waiting for the technology to mature further before allowing external AI agents to transact on its platform.
