Alibaba Philanthropy and the Jack Ma Foundation have announced $1.5 million in grants for African entrepreneurs creating innovative solutions to the continent’s major challenges.
This forms part of the launch of the 8th edition of Africa’s Business Heroes.
The 2026 edition carries the theme ‘Defining Africa’s Future Today’. It targets entrepreneurs working in climate-smart agriculture, digital finance, healthcare, logistics, manufacturing, and emerging technologies.
Africa’s Business Heroes seeks to accelerate business growth, deliver mentorship, and raise the profile of Africa-led companies capable of driving sustainable economic transformation.
Zahra Boateng-Baitie, Managing Director for Africa, said, “Africa’s future is being shaped by entrepreneurs who are addressing the continent’s most pressing challenges and unlocking its economic potential. Beyond the $1.5 m in grant funding, ABH equips founders with the strategic support they need to scale sustainable businesses, create jobs, and fuel inclusive growth.”
This year’s programme will broaden recognition to the top 100 finalists. It will also strengthen on-the-ground activities across ten African markets, with special focus on under-represented countries including Namibia, Tunisia, and Zambia.
Past top 10 finalists will receive a fully sponsored learning experience at Alibaba’s campus in Hangzhou, China.
Applications remain open to African citizens or legal residents who lead registered businesses that have shown at least three years of traction. Applicants must also show strong commitment to creating positive societal impact.
Since its inception, Africa’s Business Heroes has attracted more than 30,000 applications each year. The platform has established itself as one of Africa’s premier initiatives for entrepreneurs delivering practical solutions.
