Airtel Africa on Monday announced the partnership with SpaceX’s Starlink to deliver high-speed satellite internet to millions across the continent, targeting remote and underserved regions.

The collaboration, set to roll out in nine countries—Nigeria, Chad, Kenya, Zambia, Malawi, Rwanda, Niger, Madagascar, and the Democratic Republic of Congo—aims to bridge Africa’s digital divide, where nearly 600 million people, or 50% of the population, remain offline as of 2025.

Starlink, licensed in nine of Airtel Africa’s 14 operational markets, currently serves 237,000 African subscribers. With Airtel’s 163.1 million-strong customer base, the partnership could significantly expand reliable internet access for businesses, schools, hospitals, and individuals.

By leveraging Starlink’s low Earth orbit satellite technology and Airtel’s robust market presence, the initiative promises consistent voice and data connectivity in areas beyond the reach of traditional fiber or mobile networks.

The deal also strengthens Airtel’s enterprise offerings, enabling high-speed internet for rural healthcare, education, and other sectors.

The partnership will explore satellite-based cellular backhauling to extend Airtel’s mobile network to remote regions, addressing longstanding infrastructure challenges.

“Next-generation satellite connectivity will ensure that every individual, business, and community has reliable and affordable voice and data connectivity even in the most remote and currently underserved parts of Africa,” said Sunil Taldar, CEO of Airtel Africa.

The Airtel-SpaceX partnership has the potential to reshape Africa’s telecom industry. By integrating Starlink’s satellite internet with Airtel’s ground network, the company can greatly extend its reach into rural and remote areas—long considered too costly or difficult to serve.

“The team at Airtel has played a pivotal role in Africa’s telecom story, so working with them to complement our direct offering across Africa makes great sense for our business,” said Chad Gibbs, SpaceX’s Vice President of Starlink Business Operations.

Beyond expanding rural connectivity, the Airtel-SpaceX agreement paves the way for deeper collaboration. It could see SpaceX leveraging Airtel Africa’s extensive ground infrastructure to enhance service delivery, while both companies explore new opportunities in digital inclusion, such as affordable broadband access, education tech, and remote healthcare solutions.
