Air Peace suspends flights over NiMet strike, cites safety concerns

Domestic airline Air Peace has suspended all flight operations across Nigeria, citing serious safety concerns arising from an ongoing strike by the Nigerian Meteorological Agency.

In a statement released on Wednesday, the airline said the decision was taken to protect passengers and crew, stressing that weather updates provided by NiMet—particularly the Current Nowcast of Hazardous Weather reports—are critical for safe landings, especially during the rainy season.

“The safety of our passengers is paramount, and without real-time weather advisories from NiMet, especially amid the frequent thunderstorms and heavy rainfall currently affecting parts of the country, flight operations cannot proceed safely,” the airline stated.

Air Peace warned that the absence of CNH reports at airport control towers poses a significant threat to aviation safety, underscoring the need for urgent resolution of the strike action.

NiMet’s strike has disrupted the delivery of essential meteorological services used by pilots and air traffic controllers to make informed decisions during flight planning and landing approaches.

There is currently no timeline for the resumption of Air Peace flights, as the airline continues to monitor developments.
