Air India plane returns mid-flight after suspected technical issue

An Air India Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner en route to New Delhi was forced to return to Hong Kong mid-flight due to a suspected technical issue.

The aircraft is the same model as the one involved in last week’s Ahmedabad tragedy, an Air India spokesperson told Sky News.

The exact nature of the suspected technical issue reported by the pilot remains unknown.

According to Flightradar24 data, Flight AI315 departed Hong Kong at 12:16 p.m. and returned just over an hour later.

An Air India spokesperson said that while a technical issue has not been confirmed, the pilot suspected a possible problem.

“We are providing all necessary on-ground assistance to the passengers to minimise the inconvenience caused by this unforeseen disruption,” the spokesperson added.

The aircraft is reportedly undergoing inspections currently.

The incident follows a recent Air India Dreamliner crash that occurred shortly after takeoff from Ahmedabad airport in western India, resulting in the deaths of 229 passengers and 12 crew members. Remarkably, one person survived.

Boeing has not yet responded to a request for comment regarding the Hong Kong–New Delhi flight.
