Artificial intelligence startup Perplexity unveiled its new agent-based assistant for Android devices on Thursday, positioning itself as a challenger to OpenAI’s ChatGPT and established digital assistants like Apple’s Siri and Amazon’s Alexa.

Backed by Nvidia and Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, Perplexity announced that the Perplexity Assistant can handle tasks such as booking dinner reservations, hailing rides via apps, and setting reminders. The tool supports 15 languages and is now available on Google’s Play Store.

“We’d love to make it available on iOS, and if Apple gives us the right permissions, we’ll make it happen,” a Perplexity spokesperson said.

The launch comes as competition in the AI-powered assistant market heats up. OpenAI recently introduced a similar feature, Tasks, for its ChatGPT Team and Pro users on its web platform.

Tech giants Apple and Amazon have also been enhancing their voice assistants. Last year, Apple integrated Apple Intelligence into Siri and expanded its functionality through a partnership with OpenAI to include ChatGPT capabilities, with user consent.

Meanwhile, Amazon CEO Andy Jassy revealed in December that a revamped Alexa is in the works and set to debut in the “coming months.”
