Google invests over $1bn in OpenAI rival Anthropic

Artificial intelligence startup Anthropic, backed by Amazon, unveiled a new $200 monthly subscription plan on Wednesday for its Claude chatbot, targeting power users who rely heavily on its generative AI capabilities.

The new “Claude Max” plan is aimed at professionals and enterprises looking for extended usage limits and early access to cutting-edge AI tools. The move highlights the intensifying competition in the generative AI space, where companies like Anthropic and OpenAI are racing to attract high-value users with premium offerings.

“In addition to more usage, Max plan users will also have priority access to our newest features and models,” Anthropic said in a blog post announcing the plan. “The top request from our most active users has been expanded Claude access.”

Anthropic’s Claude Max subscription offers 20 times the usage of its standard Pro plan and is priced to match OpenAI’s highest-tier ChatGPT Pro service, which also costs $200 per month. For users needing slightly less capacity, a $100 plan is also available, offering five times the Pro tier’s usage.

The tiered pricing strategy marks a significant step in Anthropic’s broader push to monetize its technology more effectively, especially among enterprise users and developers integrating Claude into their own applications.

It also comes as Anthropic continues to position Claude as a top competitor to ChatGPT, Google’s Gemini, and Meta’s LLaMA models.

Amazon’s backing of Anthropic—part of a multi-billion-dollar commitment—has helped the startup secure infrastructure and scale to meet rising demand.

With this new premium offering, Anthropic is signaling its intent to move beyond early adopters and hobbyists toward more intensive, revenue-generating use cases.
