OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT, made a compelling argument for the use of AI in content moderation, arguing that it may increase productivity at social media companies by reducing the time it takes to complete some of the laborious duties.
“The process (of content moderation) is inherently slow and can lead to mental stress on human moderators,” OpenAI said.
“With this system, the process of developing and customizing content policies is trimmed down from months to hours.”
Despite the excitement surrounding generative AI, businesses like Microsoft and Alphabet, the owner of Google, have not yet been able to profit from the technology they have invested billions of dollars in with the expectation that it will have a significant influence on a variety of industries.
Microsoft-backed OpenAI claims that its most recent GPT-4 AI model may shorten the time required for content moderation from months to a few hours while ensuring more accurate labelling.
For social media companies like Facebook parent Meta, who work with thousands of moderators worldwide to prevent users from viewing hazardous information like child pornography and images of extreme violence, content moderation can be a taxing undertaking.
