AFG Aviation leases two aircraft to C'River's Cally Air

The state-owned airline of Cross River, Cally Air, has expanded its fleet with the lease of two aircraft from AFG Aviation, in a move aimed at boosting regional connectivity and tourism.

Governor Bassey Otu, accompanied by senior state officials and aviation suppliers, formally received the aircraft at a ceremony in Abuja on Tuesday. The governor said the development marked a major milestone in his administration’s efforts to reposition Cross River as a leading hub for travel and investment in Nigeria’s South-South region.

“Cally Air is central to our vision of making Cross River a prime destination for business and leisure,” Otu stated. “By strengthening air transport links, we are opening new opportunities for tourism, trade and economic growth, while also ensuring our people have reliable and affordable air services.”

AFG Aviation described the partnership as a strategic step that would enhance the airline’s operational capacity and reliability. The new aircraft are expected to serve both domestic routes and charter services, with a particular focus on facilitating travel to Calabar, a city long regarded as one of Nigeria’s cultural and tourism capitals.

Cally Air, launched in 2021 as a joint venture between the Cross River State Government and private investors, has faced operational challenges in recent years. Officials said the addition of the leased aircraft would help stabilise services, reduce flight delays and restore public confidence in the airline.

Governor Otu reaffirmed his government’s commitment to investing in aviation infrastructure, including upgrades at the Margaret Ekpo International Airport in Calabar, to support Cally Air’s growth.

The deal, industry analysts note, underscores a broader trend of state governments leveraging public-private partnerships to improve connectivity and attract investment.
