Abuja Chamber urges FG, states to harmonize tax policies

The Abuja Chamber of Commerce and Industry called on the federal and state governments on Monday to streamline the numerous tax systems in place in their respective domains.

The PUNCH reported that ACCI’s newly elected President, Chief Emeka Obegolu, SAN, made the call in Abuja while sending the chamber’s greetings to Christians in Nigeria on the occasion of the 2023 Christmas celebration.

Although the payment tax is regarded as a civic duty, its collection is a substantial source of money that assists the government in meeting its statutory duties.

However, the variety and duplication of taxes imposed by government agencies has become a stumbling block in the path of advancement for firms, micro, small, and medium-sized businesses battling to survive despite worsening economic conditions and unfriendly operating environment.

Many states’ business owners and industries have often complained about numerous taxation, urging the government to streamline or minimize the taxes placed on individuals.

Multiple taxation refers to the scenario in which enterprises are subject to a variety of taxes and levies imposed by multiple levels of government, putting a major strain on their financial resources.

In a personal statement, the ACCI president urged “government at all levels to prioritize the provision of essential infrastructure, streamline tax policies, and improve the ease of doing business.”
