Robinhood broadens trading services to attract active investors

Robinhood is expanding its trading products and services as it seeks to attract more active traders looking for access to markets beyond traditional U.S. stock market hours.

The brokerage announced Tuesday evening at its HOOD Summit in Houston, Texas, that it would extend trading hours while introducing crypto perpetuals and AI-powered automated trading tools.

The new offerings mark a further shift for Robinhood beyond its commission-free stock-trading roots as the company seeks to build a broader platform for active traders.

The move puts Robinhood in growing competition with crypto-focused platforms such as Coinbase, which has expanded into derivatives and other financial products, as well as traditional brokerages such as Charles Schwab, which introduced 24/7 trading in selected cryptocurrency futures on its thinkorswim platform this year.

As brokerages compete for customers trading across more markets and longer hours, the focus is shifting beyond low trading costs to factors such as market access, execution speed and automation.

Robinhood shares were little changed on Wednesday following the announcement.

“Ownership doesn’t work without markets, and markets don’t work without traders,” Robinhood CEO Vlad Tenev said in a statement. “We’re making Robinhood the best place in the world for active traders by delivering tools once reserved for hedge funds, big banks, and quant firms.”

Starting next year, Robinhood customers will be able to trade select U.S. stocks around the clock, including on weekends.

The expansion builds on the company’s 24/5 trading service launched in 2023, which allows customers to trade from 8:00 p.m. ET on Sunday through 8:00 p.m. ET on Friday.
