The management of the University of Benin has denied reports that members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities received half salaries for August.

The university said the lecturers had confused the payment of the Consolidated Academic Tools Allowance with their August salaries.

In a statement issued by the institution’s spokesperson, Dr. Beneditta Ehannire, management said the Federal Government had paid the salaries of all categories of staff in the university up to date.

According to the statement, the Consolidated Academic Tools Allowance, which was allegedly mistaken for salary, had already been disbursed to staff entitled to it.

“Management assured that whatever is due to staff of the University will be paid without hindrance, and advised against undue sensationalisation of issues by all stakeholders in order to sustain the prevailing industrial harmony in the University, and the Nigerian University System as a whole,” the statement said.

“Management emphasised the need for allegations concerning the University to be verified before publication, as the University is a public institution with a well-established system for authenticating information.”

Meanwhile, the ASUU-UNIBEN chapter has declared an indefinite strike over the payment of half salary.

The strike action was declared following the union’s congress.

The Chairman of UNIBEN-ASUU, Prof. Enaruna Edosa, in a communique issued after the congress, said the union invoked the “extant NEC resolution that granted branches authority to withdraw their services when salaries are not fully paid by the 3rd of the new month, and the resolution of the Emergency NEC of 5th September, 2026 mandating Branches in Federal universities whose salaries were underpaid to take action.”

The communique said the body declared a total and indefinite withdrawal of services until the underpaid salaries were fully paid.

It directed ASUU members to cease teaching, supervision, attendance at Departmental Board, Faculty Board, Senate or other statutory meetings, and to refrain from engaging in any academic or administrative activity while the action lasted.

The statement said a review of the decision would be taken at an emergency congress.
