Anthropic on Tuesday announced plans to change a controversial data retention policy for its business customers following “a lot of feedback,” saying it would instead introduce a new solution called Enterprise Frontier Safeguards.
The company introduced the existing retention policy in June alongside the launch of Claude Fable 5 and Mythos 5, its two most advanced artificial intelligence models. At the time, Anthropic said all traffic involving the models would be retained for 30 days to help prevent misuse and defend against “complex and novel” cyberattacks.
Anthropic had pledged not to use the retained data for any “non-safety-related purpose,” including training its AI models. However, the policy raised concerns among many of the company’s enterprise customers.
Anthropic’s head of Americas, Kate Jensen, said that the company spent hundreds of hours working with customers to develop an alternative solution, according to CNBC.
Under the new Enterprise Frontier Safeguards, businesses will have greater control over how their data is reviewed, stored and managed.
They will also be able to conduct automated safety monitoring without requiring human review by Anthropic.
Anthropic said the new safeguards will be provided at no additional cost and will work whether customers access its technology directly or through a cloud provider.
“We can do the scanning that we really need to, to help everybody feel confident, but it’s on their systems and their data so that they don’t have to compromise on their own privacy posture,” Jensen stated.
Anthropic’s data retention policy introduced in June will remain in effect for non-enterprise subscribers who use its Mythos-class models.
Founded in 2021, Anthropic generates the bulk of its revenue from enterprise customers, making the market particularly important as the company prepares for what is widely expected to be a major initial public offering (IPO).
