Uber, Zipline target one million drone deliveries daily

Uber is investing in and partnering with drone delivery company Zipline as the companies target one million daily deliveries using Zipline’s drones by the end of 2029.

The companies said Monday that Zipline drones will begin making deliveries through the Uber Eats platform by the end of this year.

The service will initially launch in Zipline’s existing markets, with plans to expand to “dozens of U.S. cities.”

The companies did not disclose the value of Uber’s investment.

Uber has been expanding its network of drone delivery partners as it seeks new ways to drive growth for Uber Eats.

The ride-hailing company is applying a strategy similar to the one it has used with robotaxis and other autonomous vehicle services, bringing multiple companies onto its platform to expand its offerings.

The strategy has helped Uber remain at the forefront of emerging technologies, even after the company sold off its own initiatives, including Uber Elevate, its aerial ridesharing programme, and the Uber Autonomous Technologies Group, which focused on self-driving vehicles.

Investments have also played a major role, with Uber committing more than $10 billion to dozens of autonomous vehicle companies.

However, the strategy has its limitations. Uber recently came into conflict with Waymo, one of its most prominent autonomous vehicle partners, with the two companies now expected to end their relationship when their contracts expire in 2028.

The companies are also taking opposing positions in the increasingly heated debate over autonomous vehicle regulation.
