Meta said it plans to open-source its most powerful artificial intelligence models and introduce new ones designed to run on consumer devices as it seeks to compete with leading AI companies such as OpenAI and Anthropic.
In an Instagram video posted on Monday, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg said the company would release the weights of its latest AI model, Muse Spark 1.2, allowing the public to download and use it.
AI weights are the underlying parameters that determine how a model processes information and generates responses.
Zuckerberg also announced a new family of open-source AI models, called Muse Glimmer, designed to run on laptops.
Meta shares rose 2.1 per cent in premarket trading on Monday.
Zuckerberg is also seeking to reassure investors that Meta Superintelligence Labs, established last year, is making progress and that the company’s massive investment in AI will generate returns.
Meta’s capital expenditure is projected to reach as much as $145 billion this year.
While companies such as Anthropic and OpenAI have largely focused on closed AI models, Chinese rivals including Alibaba, DeepSeek and Moonshot have moved aggressively to release open-weight models that have competed with leading US technology in some areas.
In a 6,500-word essay on AI published Monday, Zuckerberg framed Meta’s open-source strategy as a response to China’s advances in open AI and called on Washington to support efforts to strengthen the US position in the sector.
