Nigeria has secured $155m in clean energy investments as the Rural Electrification Agency steps up efforts to position the country as Africa’s renewable energy hub and a centre for knowledge sharing across the continent.

The Managing Director of the REA, Abba Aliyu, disclosed this in a statement on Friday, saying the investments reflected growing international confidence in Nigeria’s off-grid electricity market.

He said the country recently secured an $80m debt facility to expand off-grid solar home systems and business power solutions.

In addition, UK-backed clean energy company MOPO signed a $75m agreement with the REA to deploy a smart battery programme.

Aliyu said the investments followed ongoing reforms in Nigeria’s electricity sector, which have made the country increasingly attractive to global clean energy investors.

He said, “The recently published Sub-Saharan Africa Clean Energy Market Outlook 2026 by BloombergNEF highlights Nigeria as the continent’s largest and fastest-growing market for distributed solar and small-scale renewable energy, having attracted a $80m debt facility dedicated to expanding off-grid solar home systems and business power solutions across Nigeria.

“Similarly, UK-backed clean energy company MOPO signed a $75m deal aimed at deploying a new smart battery programme under a strategic partnership with the Rural Electrification Agency.”

He added that another international operator, WeLight, had also announced plans to enter Nigeria’s off-grid electricity market.

“WeLight, the operator of nearly 190 mini-grids across Madagascar and Mali, serving more than 800,000 people, has also announced plans to invest in Nigeria’s off-grid market.

“These massive capital injections demonstrate that international financial institutions and global developers no longer view Nigeria as a risky bet, but as the most viable and scalable off-grid energy market on the continent,” he stated.

Aliyu added that the latest achievements marked only the beginning of further developments. He said an incoming delegation from Sierra Leone was expected the following week, with several more exchange missions already lined up.
