Zamfara approves pension boost for retirees amid economic hardship

The Zamfara State Government has approved an increase in pension payments for retirees in both the state and local government system as part of efforts to improve their welfare amid the rising cost of living.

The decision was made public on Tuesday in a statement issued by the state Commissioner for Information and Culture, Mahmud Dantawasa.

The approval followed recommendations submitted after a review carried out by a special committee alongside the Office of the Accountant General.

The committee examined the condition of pensioners across the state, especially retirees receiving lower monthly payments.

The government said the review became necessary because many pensioners could no longer cope with present economic conditions due to the low amount they currently receive.

The pension adjustment also followed the Federal Government’s directive on consequential adjustment linked to the implementation of the National Minimum Wage (Amended) Act 2024.

Under the federal recommendation, pensioners were expected to receive an additional ₦32,000 monthly increase.

After examining the financial situation of the state, the Zamfara Government approved full implementation of the increase for pensioners under both the state and local government councils.

The government said thousands of retirees are expected to benefit from the new arrangement, which is aimed at easing the hardship caused by the rising prices of goods and services across the country.

The administration of Governor Dauda Lawal remains committed to improving the welfare of workers and retirees through policies that support better living conditions and economic stability.

Relevant agencies and stakeholders have been directed to ensure smooth implementation of the new pension structure so beneficiaries can receive payments without delay.

The new policy is expected to improve the lives of retired workers who served the state for many years while also strengthening social welfare support for vulnerable citizens.
