Man arrested after arson threat on OpenAI boss Sam Altman’s home

Sam Altman to launch brain-chip startup, rival Musk's Neuralink

A man has been arrested after allegedly throwing a Molotov cocktail at the home of Sam Altman and later threatening to burn down OpenAI headquarters in San Francisco on Friday, police said.

An OpenAI spokesperson confirmed the incident and said, “Thankfully, no one was hurt.”

According to a post on X from the San Francisco Police Department, officers responded to a fire at the North Beach residence of Altman after a suspect allegedly threw an “incendiary destructive device” at the home around 4 a.m.

The device reportedly ignited a fire on an exterior gate before the suspect fled on foot.

Police arrested a 20-year-old male suspect, with charges still pending.

About an hour later, officers were called to a separate report of a man making arson threats at the offices of OpenAI, where they identified him as the same suspect from the earlier incident.

“We deeply appreciate how quickly SFPD responded and the support from the city in helping keep our employees safe,” OpenAI said in its statement. “The individual is in custody, and we’re assisting law enforcement with their investigation.”

The incident comes at a particularly controversial moment for Altman and OpenAI.

In February, the company faced scrutiny after striking a deal with the U.S. Department of Defense following the Pentagon’s decision to cut ties with AI rival Anthropic.

Activists later wrote chalk messages outside the offices of both companies, with those at OpenAI urging employees to speak out against the agreement.
