The Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau has revealed that an engine anomaly caused the emergency diversion of an Arik Air Boeing 737-700 aircraft on February 11, 2026.
The incident involved the aircraft bearing nationality and registration marks 5N-MJF, which is operated by Arik Air Limited.
A statement signed by Funke Arowojobe, Director of Public Affairs and Family Assistance at NSIB, explained that the aircraft was on a scheduled flight from Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos to Obafemi Jeremiah Awolowo International Airport in Port Harcourt.
During the flight, the crew reported an abnormal engine event.
This led the flight crew to activate emergency procedures and divert the aircraft to Benin, which was the nearest suitable airport.
The aircraft landed safely at Benin Airport.
All passengers and crew members on board disembarked without any injuries.
The preliminary report includes factual information collected so far, covering details from the flight crew, air traffic control communications, flight recorders, and the initial examination of the aircraft.
NSIB emphasized that the investigation is still ongoing, with further technical examinations in progress to determine the full circumstances of the incident.
The Bureau added that the information in the preliminary report remains subject to additional review and analysis.
The final report will include the Bureau’s conclusions and any safety recommendations.
The preliminary report is available for public download on the NSIB website.
