Tinubu seeks Senate confirmation for Oyedele as finance minister of state

FG urges govs to justify use of subsidy removal savings

President Bola Tinubu has formally requested the Senate to screen and confirm Mr. Taiwo Oyedele as Minister of State for Finance.

This follows the exit of Dr. Doris Uzoka-Anite from the position.

In a separate letter, the President urged the upper chamber to confirm former Senator Magnus Abe as Chairman of the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC). He succeeds Gbenga Komolafe in the role.

The letters were read during plenary by Senate President Godswill Akpabio. They were referred to the Senate Committee on Petroleum Upstream for further action.

Oyedele is an economist, accountant, and public policy expert from Ikaram in Akoko, Ondo State. He previously chaired the Presidential Committee on Fiscal Policy and Tax Reforms, where he led initiatives to overhaul Nigeria’s tax system.

He spent 22 years at PwC, rising to the position of Fiscal Policy Partner and Africa Tax Leader.

Senator Magnus Abe, nominated to lead NUPRC, will be joined by Paul Yaro Jezhi, former Trade Union Congress chairman in Kaduna State. Also nominated is Sunday Adebayo Babalola, ex-deputy director at the defunct Department of Petroleum Resources. Both are proposed as non-executive commissioners.

The Senate’s screening and confirmation process forms part of ongoing adjustments within the Federal Executive Council.
