The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria will launch a hybrid payment system for airport access gates nationwide on March 13, allowing both cash and electronic payments.
The special adviser on media and communications to the minister,
Tunde Moshood, said the move comes after the earlier cashless-only system was suspended due to traffic congestion at several airports.
The statement noted that the minister of aviation and aerospace development, Festus Keyamo met with FAAN officials and senior ministry personnel to assess the initial rollout of the system and address the operational challenges that had been observed.
In line with the president’s directive, Keyamo, directed FAAN to suspend the cashless system and revert to the previous payment arrangement.
He also noted that a hybrid system could be implemented for passengers who already have a FAAN card.
“The ministry has resolved to engage concessionaires in order to introduce a fully automated or electronic system at access gates at the airport in order to fully and eventually eliminate cash payment.
“In the meantime, a hybrid payment system that accommodates both cash and card payments will resume at all airport access gates with effect from Friday, March 13, 2026.
“Motorists who already possess FAAN Go Cashless Cards may continue to use them. Other electronic payment options, including POS terminals and other approved digital channels, will also remain available,” Moshood said.
The ministry urged the public and road users to obtain and use the FAAN Go cashless card as the authority works to improve and fully optimise the cashless payment system.
“This directive restores the previous access gate payment arrangement while the ministry continues to work on the fully automated or electronic system,” the statement added.
