BREAKING: CBN slashes interest rate to 26.5%

The Monetary Policy Committee of the Central Bank of Nigeria has reduced the benchmark Monetary Policy Rate to 26.5 per cent.

This marks the second time the MPC has cut rates under the current leadership of the apex bank.

CBN Governor Olayemi Cardoso announced the decision on Tuesday at the conclusion of the committee’s 304th meeting in Abuja.

Cardoso said, “The Committee decided to reduce the monetary policy rate by 50 basis points to 26.5%.”

The adjustment follows a previous 50-basis-point reduction implemented in September 2025, after the MPC held rates steady at its November 2025 briefing.

The MPC’s latest rate cut came as Nigeria’s headline inflation continued to moderate, easing to 15.10 per cent in January 2026, according to data from the National Bureau of Statistics.
