FG shuts Plateau mining site after 37 villagers die

The Federal Government has ordered the immediate closure of a mining site in Plateau State following the death of at least 37 villagers from suspected toxic gas exposure during artisanal mining activities.

The incident occurred in Zurak community, located in Wase Local Government Area. Residents were reportedly working inside an abandoned mining pit when they inhaled dangerous fumes believed to have built up in poorly ventilated tunnels.

About 25 other persons were said to be receiving treatment after the exposure.

Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Dele Alake, confirmed that all operations linked to Mining Licence 11810 had been suspended pending investigations into the tragedy.

In a statement issued by his media aide, Segun Tomori, the minister described the deaths as deeply painful and avoidable.

“These were innocent Nigerians trying to earn a living. We share in the grief of the affected families and stand in solidarity with the people of the community,” Alake said.

During a condolence visit to the Plateau State Governor, Caleb Mutfwang, the minister assured the state government of federal support and promised a full investigation.

According to the statement, a high-level investigative panel led by the ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Yusuf Yabo, has been deployed to determine both the immediate and underlying causes of the disaster.

“The team will examine environmental compliance issues, mining safety conditions and the responsibilities of all parties involved. Appropriate sanctions will follow where negligence is established,” the ministry said.

Preliminary findings suggest that the mining site was previously abandoned and later informally handed over to members of the host community after agitation for access to mineral resources. The pit reportedly contains deposits capable of releasing harmful gases, including sulphur-related emissions.
