Switch has become Nintendo’s best-selling console ever, nearly nine years after its launch.
The console has been pivotal to the Japanese gaming giant’s turnaround.
Before its March 2017 release, Nintendo was reeling from the commercial failure of the Wii U, which had dragged down its share price.
Since then, Nintendo’s market value has more than tripled, with the brand enjoying renewed global popularity.
“The company was in shambles after the previous console flopped hard, so the Switch marks a major turnaround in Nintendo’s long history,” Serkan Toto, CEO of Kantan Games, told CNBC. “It could have not come at a better time.”
Nintendo announced on Tuesday that lifetime sales of the Switch have reached 155.37 million units, overtaking the Nintendo DS, which previously held the record at 154.02 million units.
The iconic Game Boy ranks third, with 118.69 million units sold.
