Trump imposes tariffs threat on nations selling oil to Cuba

India seeks to keep US trade talks on track despite tariff hike

United States President Donald Trump signed an executive order on Thursday that threatens to impose additional tariffs on countries selling oil to Cuba.

The move significantly increases economic pressure on the communist-led island nation.

The executive order, released by the White House, states in part: “An additional ad valorem (estimated value) duty may be imposed on imports of goods that are products of a foreign country that directly or indirectly sells or otherwise provides any oil to Cuba.”

The order invokes the International Emergency Economic Powers Act.

It describes the Cuban government as an “extraordinary threat” to United States national security.

The document accuses the regime of aligning itself with and providing support for numerous hostile countries, transnational terrorist groups, and malign actors adverse to the United States.

It specifically names Russia, China, and Iran, as well as the militant groups Hamas and Hezbollah.

Cuba has been subject to a comprehensive US economic embargo since 1962.

Until recently, the island received most of its oil supplies from Venezuela.

Following the ouster of Venezuela’s former president Nicolas Maduro, Trump assumed control over the country’s oil sector.

He has vowed to halt oil shipments to Cuba unless a formal agreement is reached.

Cuba has faced severe fuel shortages in recent years.

These shortages have disrupted the national power grid and caused widespread blackouts affecting residents across the island.

Mexico has continued to supply oil to Cuba.

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum denied reports earlier this week that her government had stopped oil shipments to Havana.
