Natasha Akpoti, Eberechi Eze lead Google’s 2025 searches in Nigeria

Google has unveiled its 2025 Year in Search report for Nigeria, highlighting Senator Natasha Akpoti and footballer Eberechi Eze as the country’s most searched personalities.

The annual report reveals the topics that captured Nigerians’ curiosity throughout the year, spanning major news events, prominent figures, entertainment, lifestyle, and frequently asked questions.

“This year, Nigerians used Search to stay on top of a fast-moving news cycle. High-profile figures drove significant interest, with Senator Natasha Akpoti emerging as the #1 most searched Nigerian personality, highlighting how central political discourse was throughout the year,” the report stated.

Beyond local news, Nigerians also followed international events closely, with the Israel-Iran conflict and the US elections ranking among the top search trends.

Taiwo Kola-Ogunlade, noted that the 2025 Year in Search report goes beyond statistics, offering insight into what genuinely captured Nigerians’ interest.

“The 2025 Year in Search is more than just data; it’s a vibrant, unfiltered mirror of our collective attention.

“Whether it’s tracking the biggest headlines, reflecting on the legacies of icons we lost, or simply figuring out the latest slang, these lists show that Nigerians are using Search to actively engage with the world around them,” he said.

The report shows that Nigerians were keenly interested in a diverse range of personalities spanning politics, entertainment, sports, and global pop culture. On the local front, figures such as Natasha Akpoti, Eberechi Eze, Governor Sim Fubara, Chika Ike, Mr Eazi, Kemi Adetiba, Hilda Baci, VDM, and Priscilla Ojo captured widespread attention.

Globally, search interest was fueled by personalities such as Gyokeres, Garnacho, Joao Pedro, Aaron Pierre, and Tyler Perry.

Entertainers also drew significant attention, with Aaron Pierre, Chika Ike, Juma Jux, Mr Eazi, and Kemi Adetiba ranking among the most searched in the entertainment category.

Nigerians also showed curiosity about word meanings, particularly terms like Achalugo, allegedly, and Labubu.

In 2025, Nigerians turned to Google Search to track major losses, cultural moments, and trending stories across politics, entertainment, and technology. Interest surged following the deaths of prominent figures, including former President Buhari, Pope Francis, and public personalities like Diogo Jota and Charlie Kirk.

The top news topics that dominated Nigerian searches in 2025 included the Club World Cup, Diogo Jota, former President Muhammadu Buhari, Charlie Kirk, and the iPhone 17.
