Samsung to deploy 50,000 Nvidia GPUs for AI-powered chip manufacturing

Samsung blames US AI chip sanctions for profit slump, shares dip

Korean semiconductor powerhouse Samsung announced on Thursday plans to purchase and deploy 50,000 Nvidia graphics processing units to enhance its chip manufacturing capabilities for mobile devices and robotics.

The GPUs will power what Samsung is calling an “AI Megafactory,” though the company has not revealed a timeline for the facility’s construction.

The move marks another high-profile collaboration for Nvidia, whose chips remain crucial for developing and running advanced artificial intelligence.

The Samsung partnership follows Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang’s announcement on Tuesday in Washington, D.C., that the company is collaborating with firms including Palantir, Eli Lilly, CrowdStrike, and Uber.

Nvidia said other Korean firms, such as SK Group and Hyundai, are deploying comparable numbers of GPUs.

“We’re working closely with the Korean government to support its ambitious leadership plans in AI,” Raymond Teh, Nvidia’s senior vice president of Asia-Pacific, said.

The collaborations reinforce Huang’s statement on Tuesday that Nvidia’s current-generation Blackwell GPUs, along with its upcoming Rubin GPUs, account for a $500 billion pipeline of business.

On Thursday, Nvidia representatives said they will collaborate with Samsung to adapt the company’s chipmaking lithography platform for use with Nvidia GPUs.

According to Nvidia, this integration could boost Samsung’s performance by up to 20 times.

Samsung will also leverage Nvidia’s simulation software, Omniverse, and, beyond its mobile phone business, the company plans to use the GPUs to run its own AI models for its devices.
