Lufthansa may be headed for a strike after the pilots’ union Vereinigung Cockpit announced on Tuesday that its members had voted in favour of industrial action over a pension dispute.
The ballot marks the union’s latest effort to increase pressure on the airline for an improved agreement and comes just a day after Lufthansa outlined its efficiency strategy at its capital markets day.
Lufthansa has resisted making further pension concessions and warned it could shift more positions to its lower-cost subsidiaries, Discover and City Airlines.
In a statement, pilots’ union Vereinigung Cockpit said an overwhelming majority backed strike action, though no date has been set.
The vote heightens the risk of fresh and potentially disruptive labour unrest for Lufthansa, which has already grappled with multiple union disputes in recent years while trying to reduce expenses and drive growth, according to Reuters.
Just a day earlier, the airline announced plans to cut 4,000 administrative jobs by 2030 and set more ambitious profitability targets.
