NIPOST seizes cannabis-laden package hidden in duvet cover

NIPOST reveals reason behind delay in meeting deliveries

The Nigerian Postal Service has seized a suspicious package containing seven pouches of cannabis hidden inside a duvet cover, as part of its intensified efforts to curb the misuse of postal and courier services for illegal activities.

In a statement released on Tuesday, NIPOST said the parcel was sent from Bangkok, Thailand, and addressed to a Lagos recipient.

The package was flagged upon arrival and promptly subjected to security inspection.

“The Nigerian Postal Service has intercepted a consignment containing seven pouches of cannabis concealed inside a duvet cover that arrived in Lagos from Thailand,” the statement read.

The agency revealed that the identities of both the sender and the recipient are being withheld while security operatives continue their investigation.

The seized package has been handed over to the appropriate authorities for further action.

NIPOST emphasized that the incident underscores its heightened vigilance and commitment to preventing drug traffickers from exploiting the postal network.

“This interception underscores our continued commitment to transforming the postal industry into a secure, reliable, and trusted channel of communication and commerce. It demonstrates NIPOST’s determination to protect the public from the dangers of illicit substances while safeguarding the integrity of the postal network,” the agency stated.

The agency further reiterated its zero-tolerance policy toward any misuse of postal services.

“In line with the Renewed Hope Agenda of the Federal Government, NIPOST reaffirms its zero-tolerance for the use of its network for illicit and illegal activities. We remain resolute in safeguarding the integrity of our operations and assure the public of our unwavering commitment to ensuring that the postal industry continues to serve as a catalyst for national security, economic growth, and public trust,” it added.

The seizure comes just two months after NIPOST pledged to crack down on courier operators involved in the trafficking of narcotics and contraband.

In July 2025, the postal regulator warned that it would step up oversight of the logistics industry to close loopholes exploited by criminals, noting that courier companies found complicit in drug trafficking or other illegal activities could lose their operating licences.

At the time, NIPOST condemned the use of courier services for criminal purposes, including the transport of drugs, weapons, and counterfeit goods, and reaffirmed its commitment to cleaning up the sector by ensuring that all licensed operators adhere to regulatory standards and international best practices.
