Power outage hits Akwa Ibom, Rivers, Bayelsa, Cross River

The Transmission Company of Nigeria has confirmed a forced power outage on the Aba/Itu 132 kilovolt transmission line, which occurred on Saturday, September 13, 2025, at approximately 1:03 am due to a line trip.

According to TCN’s spokesperson, Ndidi Mbah, the incident interrupted bulk power supply to the Port Harcourt Electricity Distribution Company and Akwa Ibom State. PHED’s coverage area also includes Bayelsa, Cross River, and Rivers states.

“The Transmission Company of Nigeria wishes to inform the public of a forced outage on the Aba/Itu 132kV Transmission Line that occurred on Saturday, September 13, 2025, at approximately 01:03 am due to a line trip,” the statement read. “This incident interrupted bulk power supply to the Port Harcourt Electricity Distribution Company and also power supply to Akwa Ibom State.”

TCN’s maintenance crew has promptly responded to the situation and is working diligently to rectify the fault and restore power supply to the affected areas.

The commission apologized for any inconvenience “this has caused and assure that power will be restored as soon as the repairs are completed”.

This incident highlights the fragile state of Nigeria’s power transmission network, with outages on major transmission lines often cascading into widespread supply disruptions across multiple states.

In a similar incident on September 8, a thunderstorm led to the snapping of the 132kV Otukpo–Nsukka–New Haven transmission line, sparking a fire that burned a house and a car, and killed two cows.
