Bolt launches dash cam safety feature for Nigerian drivers

Ride-hailing company Bolt has unveiled a new safety feature for drivers in Nigeria that transforms smartphones into dash cams through a partnership with U.S.-based Driver Technologies.

The feature, long requested by drivers, allows simultaneous recording of a vehicle’s interior and exterior. Videos are stored securely in the cloud and can be accessed or shared during disputes, insurance claims, or investigations.

Under the arrangement, Bolt driver-partners will receive one month of free access to Driver’s premium app, after which they can subscribe at a discounted fee of N4,810 ($3.50) per month.

“Driver partners regularly tell us that a dash cam can provide them with additional security and peace of mind,” Bolt Nigeria General Manager, Osi Oguah, said in a statement. “But buying a device that meets their requirements can be expensive, with drivers citing cost as the main obstacle.”

The rollout reflects how African ride-hailing markets are adapting global safety innovations to local contexts, where high hardware costs make dedicated dash cams largely inaccessible.

According to Bolt, the app runs in the background without disrupting ride-hailing operations and includes a picture-in-picture function to confirm active recording. The system enables drivers to store, access and share footage via the Driver Cloud.

The initiative complements Bolt’s existing in-app safety tools, including pick-up codes and Trusted Contacts. It also follows the company’s broader investments in rider and driver security across African markets.

For Driver Technologies, the collaboration expands its footprint in emerging markets. The firm will provide IT support and data management services to Nigerian drivers.

Founded in 2013, Bolt operates in over 600 cities across 50 countries, with more than 4.5 million drivers worldwide. The company said the Nigeria launch underscores its push to strengthen driver welfare and safety across Africa.
