Instagram developing ‘Picks’ feature to connect users over shared interests

Instagram is working on a new feature called “Picks” designed to help users bond over common interests. The Meta-owned social network confirmed that Picks is currently an internal prototype and is not being tested publicly.

The upcoming feature was first spotted by reverse engineer Alessandro Paluzzi, known for uncovering unreleased tools in popular apps. According to screenshots he shared, Picks would allow users to choose their favourite movies, books, TV shows, games, and music. Instagram would then highlight overlaps between a user’s selections and those of their friends, potentially sparking conversations based on shared tastes.

Although Instagram has not revealed full details, the company appears to be positioning Picks as a way to deepen personal connections on the platform. The move aligns with recent comments from Instagram head Adam Mosseri, who announced in January that the platform would prioritise “creativity and connection” in 2025.

“To help people connect with friends over the things they discover on Instagram, we’re going to double down on messaging, make consuming content more interactive and social, and explore new ways to connect with friends,” Mosseri wrote earlier this year.

However, not all users may embrace Picks. Critics argue Instagram is already crowded with features, pointing to mixed reactions following the launch of Instagram Map. Many complained the location-based tool was unnecessary and cluttered the interface.

Like many experimental features, there is no confirmed launch date for Picks — and it may never be released. For now, the project remains under development, with Meta keeping details tightly under wraps.

If rolled out, Picks could mark Instagram’s latest effort to evolve beyond photo sharing, placing greater emphasis on personal interaction and discovery within its sprawling app ecosystem.
