Instagram is launching a suite of new features designed to enhance social sharing and content discovery, including Instagram Map, a location-based tool that allows users to share their latest in-app location and explore content tied to specific places.
The feature is rolling out in the U.S. starting Wednesday, with global availability to follow.
Instagram Map mimics Snap Map, one of Snapchat’s most popular features, in a bid to tap into real-time, location-driven social engagement. With over 400 million monthly active users, Snap Map has remained a core part of Snapchat’s identity—a crown Instagram now appears keen to challenge.
According to Meta, Instagram’s parent company, location sharing is off by default on Instagram Map. The user’s position updates only when the app is opened, distinguishing it from Snap Map’s real-time tracking option.
Instagram already supports real-time location sharing via direct messages, though only for up to one hour—unlike Snap Map or Apple’s Find My, which allow indefinite sharing.
Beyond live locations, Instagram Map serves as a discovery tool. Users can view posts, reels, and stories tagged at various locations, whether shared by friends or creators. For example, if a friend posts a story from a concert or a creator shares a restaurant reel in your area, that content will appear on the map. Users can also leave short messages, called “Notes,” on the map—a feature borrowed from Instagram’s DM section.
Meta hopes the feature will appeal to fans of Zenly, the now-defunct social mapping app once owned by Snap, and foster spontaneous meetups among friends.
In addition to the map, Instagram is introducing a “Reposts” feature—its own spin on TikTok shares and Twitter (now X) retweets. The update allows users to repost reels and feed posts publicly, with shared content appearing in a new Reposts tab on their profiles and in friends’ feeds. Users can also include a captioned note with each repost.
Instagram says the feature is designed to help users express their interests while amplifying reach for content creators.
