More than a decade after ‘The Social Network’ captivated audiences with the origin story of Facebook, director Aaron Sorkin is reportedly developing a sequel and may have already found his lead actors.
Sorkin has met with Jeremy Allen White, star of the hit series ‘The Bear,’ and rising actress Mikey Madison, known for her Oscar-winning role in ‘Anora,’ According to Deadline.
White is reportedly being considered for the role of Jeff Horwitz, the Wall Street Journal journalist behind The Facebook Files, a bombshell investigation into the platform’s role in spreading misinformation and harming teenage users.
Madison may portray Frances Haugen, the former Facebook product manager turned whistleblower, whose leaked internal documents formed the backbone of Horwitz’s reporting. Haugen testified before U.S. Congress in 2021, accusing the company of prioritizing profit over user safety.
Unlike the 2010 original, which chronicled Mark Zuckerberg’s ascent during Facebook’s early days, the sequel will focus on the platform’s more recent controversies, drawing inspiration from Horwitz’s reporting and the public fallout that followed.
While Sorkin is said to be actively developing the project, the film has not yet been officially greenlit by Sony Pictures. Casting decisions remain tentative, and further details on production are still under wraps.
The original ‘Social Network,’ directed by David Fincher and written by Sorkin, won three Academy Awards and was widely praised for its sharp script and cultural relevance. If the sequel moves forward, it could once again position Facebook — and Sorkin — at the center of a national conversation.
