Tigran Gambaryan quits Binance after eight-month legal battle in Nigeria

Head of Financial Crime Compliance at Binance and a former United States Internal Revenue Service agent, Tigran Gambaryan, is leaving the crypto exchange after enduring an eight-month legal battle in Nigeria.

He confirmed that Friday marks his final day at the company, according to Bloomberg.

Gambaryan was detained by the Nigerian government in 2023 on charges of money laundering and currency manipulation after traveling to the country for official Binance business.

His case drew widespread international attention and scrutiny over Nigeria’s handling of cryptocurrency regulations and foreign corporate representatives.

Gambaryan was released in October on humanitarian grounds due to his declining health while in detention, and the Nigerian authorities subsequently dropped the charges against him.

“Tigran has made a lasting impact on Binance, just as he did in his previous roles in law enforcement,” a Binance stated.

“We are deeply grateful for his dedication in transforming our financial crimes compliance organization. Thanks to his tireless efforts, the crypto industry is safer for all.”

Before joining Binance in 2021, Gambaryan earned a reputation as a leading crypto crimes investigator for the US government, gaining the nickname “Crypto Wizard” for his skill in tracing illicit blockchain transactions.

At Binance, he focused on strengthening the company’s anti-money laundering measures and assisting global law enforcement with asset seizures amid increasing regulatory scrutiny of major exchanges.

His departure comes as Binance edges closer to resolving its legal challenges in the US.
