TikTok announced on Tuesday the rollout of new AI-powered Smart Keyword Filters, aimed at giving users greater control over the content they see on their For You feed.

While TikTok has long allowed users to filter specific keywords, the new Smart Keyword Filters will expand that capability by using artificial intelligence to recognize and block related or synonymous terms. For instance, filtering the word “remodeling” may now also exclude content featuring words like “renovation” and “renovations.”

The platform says users will be able to review and manage these additional filtered terms, with options to select or deselect individual keywords as needed. TikTok also plans to expand the current keyword limit, allowing up to 200 filters, double the existing cap of 100. Bulk keyword entry will also be supported in the near future, making the process more efficient.

TikTok says it expects the AI behind the feature to improve in accuracy and relevance over time, as more users engage with the tool.

In addition, TikTok’s Manage Topics feature, which lets users adjust how much of certain categories like sports, food, or travel appear in their feed, is now being rolled out globally. Originally piloted in the U.S. in August 2024, the feature can be found under Settings > Content Preferences > Manage Topics, where users can fine-tune their For You feed with a simple slider.

Alongside these updates, TikTok also launched a new educational guide to help users better understand how to personalize their feeds using these tools.

The updates mark TikTok’s latest effort to offer users more transparency and agency in how content is delivered, amid ongoing discussions around algorithmic influence and online well-being.
