Two dead, many injured as Mexican navy ship crashes into US bridge

A Mexican Navy training ship collided with New York’s Brooklyn Bridge, resulting in two deaths and 17 injuries.

In a statement on X, the Navy confirmed that the vessel Cuauhtémoc, carrying 277 people, sustained damage during the incident.

Eyewitness video shared online showed the vessel, flying a large Mexican flag, scraping beneath the Brooklyn Bridge and snapping off the tops of its masts. The ship then drifted toward the riverbank as bystanders rushed away from the shore.

Naval cadets in white uniforms were seen hanging from the ship’s crossbeams in the aftermath of the crash.

New York City Mayor Eric Adams confirmed that two people were killed and 17 injured, including two in critical condition.

Eyewitnesses told the Associated Press they saw two individuals being carried off the ship on stretchers.

No one reportedly fell into the water during the incident.

The ship’s 147-foot (45-meter) masts were too tall to pass under the arched Brooklyn Bridge and toppled as the vessel — named after the last Aztec emperor, Cuauhtémoc — sailed beneath it.

Mayor Adams said a “unified effort” was under way to “make sure that we look after all of those who were on the ship”.

According to the New York Police Department, the vessel lost power before crashing into the Brooklyn Bridge.

The bridge has now reopened, and officials say it did not sustain any significant structural damage.

The Cuauhtémoc measures approximately 297 feet (90 meters) in length and 40 feet (12 meters) in width, according to the Mexican Navy. It first sailed in 1982.

Each year, the vessel embarks on a voyage at the end of the naval military school term to complete the training of cadets.
