The Sam Mbakwe International Cargo Airport in Owerri, Imo State, has recorded a historic achievement with the successful launch of its first international flight—a direct trip to Medina, Saudi Arabia.

The non-stop flight, operated by Air Peace, transported 315 Muslim pilgrims from Owerri to the Holy City on Saturday, officially marking the commencement of the 2025 Hajj pilgrimage. The milestone flight was carried out using a Boeing 777-300, one of the largest commercial aircraft in operation, showcasing the airport’s enhanced capacity to handle long-haul international services.

Vice President Kashim Shettima, who flagged off the inaugural flight, hailed the development as “a symbol of progress, unity, and Nigeria’s growing influence in global aviation.” He praised Imo State Governor Hope Uzodinma for championing improvements in infrastructure and promoting religious inclusivity.

“This is not just a routine flight—it is a powerful testament to how far our aviation sector has advanced,” Shettima remarked.

Governor Uzodinma expressed optimism about positioning Owerri as a regional aviation hub that serves both Christian and Muslim pilgrims. “Our vision is to make Imo a central point for spiritual journeys in Nigeria, whether it’s to Mecca or Jerusalem,” he stated.

The event also drew the attendance of prominent religious and traditional leaders, including the Sultan of Sokoto, His Eminence Muhammadu Sa’ad Abubakar III. The Sultan described the initiative as a major relief for pilgrims from the South-East, easing logistical challenges for international travel.

In response to speculation about its role in Hajj operations, Air Peace reaffirmed its commitment to supporting national objectives. “This flight is a clear demonstration of our capability and dedication to serving the country,” the airline said in a statement.

The historic flight signals a new era for Imo’s aviation sector and boosts the state’s standing as a key player in Nigeria’s transportation landscape.
