In a move to bolster user safety online, Google announced Thursday that it is rolling out new AI-powered features to help combat scams on its Chrome browser.
The tech giant will deploy its on-device large language model, Gemini Nano, on desktop and Android to detect and warn users about deceptive websites and scam notifications in real time.
Gemini Nano will now power Enhanced Protection mode in Chrome’s Safe Browsing feature, offering users a smarter, faster line of defense. According to Google, this advanced mode already provides twice the protection against phishing and other threats compared to the standard setting.
With Gemini Nano, it will now also be able to flag previously unseen scam sites using AI to analyze and interpret website behavior and content.
“Gemini Nano’s ability to understand the varied and complex nature of websites allows us to respond to evolving scam tactics more effectively,” the company stated in a blog post.
The AI model is already being used to warn users against remote tech support scams and will soon expand to detect more forms of online deception, including scams targeting Android users.
On Android, Chrome will also introduce new AI-powered alerts for suspicious push notifications. When a scammy notification is detected, users will be prompted to unsubscribe or view the blocked content. They can also override the warning if they believe it was shown in error.
These updates are part of Google’s broader strategy to use artificial intelligence to strengthen security across its platforms.
The company revealed that its AI systems already block hundreds of millions of scammy search results daily and have helped cut airline impersonation scams on Search by over 80%.
