Chinese artificial intelligence service, DeepSeek became available again on South Korean app stores on Monday, nearly two months after downloads were suspended over concerns about data privacy violations.
The South Korean Personal Information Protection Commission said last week that when DeepSeek first launched in the country in January, it had transferred user data and prompts without proper consent, breaching local data protection regulations.
Following the discovery, app downloads were halted in February. However, the service is now once again accessible via major platforms, including Apple’s App Store and Google Play Store.
In a revised privacy policy, DeepSeek stated: “We process your personal information in compliance with the Personal Information Protection Act of Korea.” The company also said users can opt out of having their personal information shared with partner companies based in China and the United States.
DeepSeek did not immediately respond to requests for comment on its return to the South Korean market.
According to the PIPC, DeepSeek voluntarily decided to resume downloads after making changes that at least partially addressed the commission’s recommendations.
