The Federal Government has announced key dates in April 2025 for the rollout of its Compressed Natural Gas Initiative, signaling major steps in the transition to cleaner energy across the country.

According to a statement by Kenechukwu Chukwu, Technical Assistant on Stakeholder Management and Public Engagement for the Presidential CNG Initiative, the commissioning of CNG distribution and refueling stations is slated for April 25, 2025. The stations will be launched across six strategic locations: Enugu, the Federal Capital Territory, Lokoja (Kogi State), Port Harcourt (Rivers State), Ado Ekiti (Ekiti State), and Abia State.

In a related development, the Federal Ministry of Youths will on April 15 flag off the first phase of the CNG tricycle deployment programme—an important milestone in the broader CNG rollout strategy.

As part of investment efforts to expand CNG access, particularly in Northern Nigeria, the government is set to sign a $6 million investment agreement with Arete for a Mini-LNG Project on April 4. A presidential press briefing will also be held that day to provide updates on the initiative’s progress.

Further activities include a landmark agreement on April 11 between the PCNGI and public sector unions, aimed at delivering CNG conversions to 200,000 public sector employees.

Looking ahead, CNG-powered buses will be officially handed over to the Nigerian Army on May 5. This will be followed by the commencement of training for personnel of the Army, Navy, Air Force, and Police on May 19.

The statement also revealed that in May, the government will operationalize the autogas framework in collaboration with the Gas Aggregation Company of Nigeria and the Nigerian Gas Marketing Limited, to ensure seamless and discounted CNG supply for the auto sector.
