The Federal Government, through the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority, has approved a licence for MRO Energy Limited to construct a 10,000 barrels per stream day refinery in Imode, Ughelli, Delta State.

This development follows the granting of a licence two months ago to Process Design and Development Limited for the establishment of a new 27,000 barrels per day refinery in Dole-Wure, Akko area of Gombe State.

The NMDPRA in a post on its official X handle on Tuesday, said, “The authority Chief Executive, Farouk Ahmed presented a Licence To Establish a 10,000 Barrels Per Stream Day Refinery at Imode In Ughelli, Delta State, to MRO Energy Limited.”

The recent development increases Nigeria’s refining capacity, bringing the total number of modular and regular refineries to about 11.

Earlier this month, the Petroleum Products Retail Outlets Owners Association of Nigeria revealed plans to collaborate with partners on a new refinery with an initial capacity of 50,000 barrels per day.

Despite the increase in the number of refineries, many remain inactive, with most not operating at full capacity or efficiently.
