OpenAI has reached a significant milestone, with its ChatGPT service now boasting 300 million weekly active users.
This was disclosed by the CEO, Sam Altman during the New York Times DealBook Summit on Wednesday.
The figure represents rapid growth, as the user base was reported to be at 250 million just a week earlier, according to CNBC.
OpenAI is aiming to reach 1 billion active users within the next year as part of its aggressive growth strategy in the highly competitive generative AI market.
The company faces stiff competition from rivals like Anthropic, backed by Amazon, and xAI, led by Elon Musk.
Altman referred to xAI as a “fierce competitor” during the DealBook Summit.
OpenAI also competes with major tech players like Google, Meta, Microsoft, and Amazon, as the generative AI industry is projected to generate over $1 trillion in revenue within the next decade.
OpenAI on Tuesday named Kate Rouch as its first Chief Marketing Officer, marking a significant shift toward enhancing its marketing strategy.
Rouch, formerly the CMO at Coinbase and a long-time executive at Meta, will focus on promoting OpenAI’s suite of products, including ChatGPT, to both consumer and enterprise audiences.
She will also play a pivotal role in supporting OpenAI’s mission to develop Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) that benefits humanity.
Also at DealBook on Wednesday, Altman denied reports that the company had asked investors not to also invest in its competitors but said that those who decide to wouldn’t have access to OpenAI’s “information rights,” like the company’s roadmap and other materials.
At the DealBook Summit, OpenAI CEO addressed reports suggesting that the company discouraged investors from supporting its competitors.
Altman denied these claims but clarified that investors who choose to back other AI companies would lose access to OpenAI’s “information rights.”
OpenAI’s valuation has surged to $157 billion, reflecting its rapid growth and the global success of ChatGPT since its launch in late 2022
