In a concerning development for one of Nigeria’s leading financial institutions, GTBank’s domain address has been compromised and taken offline.
As of Wednesday evening, the bank’s official website, gtbank.com, was inaccessible to customers.
This incident comes shortly after the bank renewed its domain name for another five years, from August 13, 2024, to March 21, 2029, according to domain monitoring platforms.

The apparent breach, which seems to have begun on August 14, has not been claimed by any hacker group. GTBank has yet to respond to requests for comment on the situation.
While the website remains down, frustrated customers have taken to social media platform X to voice their concerns about their inability to access the website for transactions.
“GTBank forgot to renew their domain name 😂. This country is a jungle! 😩” A user, Stanley KC tweeted.
His comment was quickly followed up with another user, Nnamso Anthony who informed that the domain name has been paid for. “Someone in the US has paid for @gtbank domain,” he posted.
“If you are currently able to access gtbank website without any issue, it’s mostly one of two things. 1. Your browser is rendering a cached version. 2. Your browser security settings is messed up.” another user, Balogun 19, posted.
“Omo someone let a phishing attack in and now Gtbank’s domain name has been bought out from under them. People are losing their jobs this week.,” another user added.
GTBank, which serves millions of customers across Nigeria and other African countries, is one of the nation’s largest banks. The potential impact of this breach on its operations and customer data security remains to be seen.
