Multichoice to appeal court ruling on N150m fine, free subscription

Multichoice Nigeria has announced that it will appeal Friday’s verdict by the Competition and Consumer Protection Tribunal, CCPT, which imposed a N150 million fine for contesting the court’s jurisdiction.

This follows the ruling of the Competition and Consumer Protection Tribunal for contesting the court’s jurisdiction, which fined Multichoice Nigeria N150 million for disregarding its orders.

Additionally, the business was directed to give Nigerians a complimentary one-month free subscription to both DStv and GOtv packages.

In a case filed by Festus Onifade, who argued that the eight-day notice provided for the price hike was insufficient.

The lawyer representing Multichoice had argued that price regulatory issues had been resolved by earlier decisions, but Mr. Onifade’s attention was drawn to the insufficient notice rather than the price increase itself, which prompted the tribunal to uphold its authority and decide against Multichoice.

The court fixed July 3 for a hearing of the substantive suit of the Plaintiff.

The tribunal had earlier prevented Multichoice from raising subscription prices without appropriate notice.

However, in response to the ruling, Multichoice has said it will appeal against it.

The statement reads “MultiChoice Nigeria is aware of the recent ruling by the Competition and Consumer Protection Tribunal, CCPT, regarding its jurisdiction to entertain a price regulation matter.

“We disagree with the ruling, and will therefore file an appeal against said ruling.

“As the matter is currently sub judice, we are restrained from making further comments.”
