Apple explores integrating OpenAI, Google’s AI into iOS 18

Apple is in discussion with both OpenAI and Google to introduce generative AI to iOS 18 the next iPhone operating system, but has not reached a final decision.

Business Insider earlier reported that the 16th version of the iPhone was expected to be launched. It’s the first time that generative artificial intelligence will be integrated into an Apple phone, and according to experts, it could send its stock soaring.

While the next iPhone could be equipped with AI features inspired by Apple’s in-house big language model, it is currently planning to incorporate a chatbot similar to OpenAI’s GPT model into its partnership with an established AI creator, according to Bloomberg.

It was reported that Apple had discussed a partnership with OpenAI in the first quarter of this year, but nothing has been heard since.

Apple CEO, Tim Cook has been more open about his company’s plans for AI over the past few months. He said in February that his company would be announcing major news later this year about the introduction of new technology to its product line.

“As we look ahead, we will continue to invest in these and other technologies that will shape the future,” BI previously reported he said during the company’s fourth-quarter earnings call, “That includes artificial intelligence, where we continue to spend a tremendous amount of time and effort,” he said.

In March, Apple revealed plans for a new Mac line that would introduce M4 processors targeted at artificial intelligence and drove its stock up by 4% despite heavy regulatory scrutiny as well as the DOJ’s antimonopoly lawsuit.

The suit, combined with headwinds from China in the form of diminished sales in that key market, has created “a perfect storm for Cupertino,” analyst Dan Ives wrote in an April 9 report on the company’s stock. He said, however, expects Apple to perform better than the current market returns.

“Our forest through the trees view on Apple is all about navigating this next 1-2 quarters and getting on to the other side of easier comps, AI announcement at WWDC, stronger upgrade cycle for iPhone 16, and the monetization opportunity of the golden installed base in Cupertino,” according to Ives analysis.

Meanwhile, BI reports that Apple, Google, and OpenAI did not immediately respond to requests for comments.
